Additional Setup for Grade 4 L2 and Grade 5 L1:

  1. M4 Lesson 2 and M5 Lesson 1 need some quick set up before you start the lesson:
    • M4L2: Tape out a starting line and targets as shown here. Students will launch ping pong balls into these targets.
    • M5L1: Set up 2 testing stations:
      1. Using blue tape, create a starting line and an 18 in. goal post about 4 ft away.
      2. Include a small paper ball (i.e. scrunch up some paper and cover it with tape) – If you have ping pong balls, you can use those instead.

Tips!

1. Budget about 1 hour and 15 minutes for each lesson. The video lesson is divided into three parts:

        • 15-minute introduction that teaches key SEL and STEM concepts and introduces the challenge
        • 30-45 minutes of building time for kids to explore, create, and problem-solve
        • 15-minute wrap-up that guides cleanup, a gallery walk, and reflection

2. Creativity is beautifully messy, so the building phase might look a little wild. But don’t worry–cleanup is part of the fun and is covered in the second half of the video!

Note for Grade 5:

For Grade 5, only one lesson is provided in this pilot, as all the remaining M5 lessons need special materials.
